Families and Housing Group update April 2012

The group has been fairly busy during the past period. We held a meeting on the 16th March to look at the Access database option for interrogating the data and then discussed the practicalities of capturing census data into spreadsheets. Read the notes of the meeting here.

16 Mar 2012 Notes on the workshop Excel and Access

Helen and Carole held an informal meeting on the 29th of March to discuss the way forward and we decided that we would capture the census data from the years 1841, 1861, 1891 and 1911 into spreadsheets and then use this for various queries in Access.  Before the data could be used it has to be checked for accuracy and several members have volunteered to do this for us.  (see the meeting notes).  We have also made copies of the original documents for this purpose and I am pleased to inform you that we have managed to capture the data for all the Census years plus for 1901 under the following headings (more or less)

No of household/Given name/Surname/Relationship/Age/Estimated birth year/Birth City/Birth Country.

The data has been uploaded to Google Documents and access to this has been given to Helen Ashdown as well.

Volunteers will be sent the data to check as agreed.

******************

Helen has also been experimenting with data in the Access database and has produced several query results which can be consulted here.

PLEASE INFORM ME OF ANY POTENTIAL COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENTS

We have also finished transcribing the data from the Monumental inscriptions photographic  project from 2008 and we are in the process of capturing the data from the “Register of Graves in the Burial Ground of the Terrington and Ganthorpe in Yorkshire”  journal in a spreadsheet and will post this when completed.

Please let us know of any mistakes or updates required in these documents

Vernacular Building Practical Exercise 4 May

At the workshop held on the 24 February by Tony Tolhurst of the Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group on how to record details of older houses in the village, the group requested that there be a follow-up practical exercise held in the village.   Tony and a colleague have agreed to come to Terrington on

Friday 4 May from 10.00 am.

The plan is to walk around the village with Tony and to identify potentially “interesting” features and to discuss ways to recognize  them. After this we have kindly had permission from the Hughes to do a practical measurement exercise on Columbine Cottage.

We suggest that interested members meet at the Plump at 10.00.

As it might take a few hours to complete this exercise we suggest that you plan your refreshments accordingly.

Please could all interested persons let me know if you intend to participate in this exercise.

Many thanks

Historical presentation by Arts Society

Dear Members

As not all the members of the History Society are members of Terrington Arts I have been asked to call your attention to a forthcoming presentation which might be of interest to you.

The Sixth Wife’ by Alison Neil, One Woman Theatre  is to be held on FRIDAY 9 MARCH 7.30 in TERRINGTON VILLAGE HALL

This play is set on the night that Katherine Parr waits for her husband the King to die.  She takes the opportunity to reflect on her extraordinary life, and the reign of the glorious, tyrannical – and tragic – Henry VIII.  Katherine Parr saw each of his previous wives as they came and went – in a variety of unpleasant ways.  Her own life was far from peaceful with four marriages, two indictments for treason, one love affair, power, wealth and then death at the age of 36.  She became Queen Regent when Henry went to fight the French; she later helped to form the new religion of England; she also befriended a lonely and abandoned child, who later became Queen Elizabeth I.  In this fast-moving and entertaining play, Katherine casts her witty, observant eye over the turbulent Tudor age; and shows how ‘a mere woman’ could shape the mind of a King – and the future of a nation

TICKETS £6 (£8 for you non-member friends) from Anita on 01653 648328, Terrington Stores or Malton TIC (now in the Library)

Oral History Group

At the meeting of held on the 7th of November 2011,  several members expressed interest in being part of the Oral History recording group.  Gerry Bradshaw has been in contact with the York Oral History Group to discuss the possibility of them  doing a workshop for us to assist us in getting this project off the ground but they have not set a definite date yet.  In the meantime we are calling on all volunteers who feel confident enough to tackle this and who have interviewing skills.

Both Gerry and John Goodwill have some data recorded and transcribed from 10 years ago and could advise anyone who would like to get involved in this area.  Please could all interested persons let either Gerry or Carole Willis know.

Thanks
